Collection: Frances Hodgkins

Frances Hodgkins, born in Dunedin (1869–1947), embarked on a journey to Europe in 1901. By the late 1920s, she had established herself as a significant figure in British Modernism and exhibited alongside pioneering artists like Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, and Henry Moore.

Over her nearly six-decade-long career, which spanned two World Wars and periods of profound social and cultural transformation, Hodgkins captured the essence of a new era.

Today, she is widely celebrated as one of New Zealand's most accomplished expatriate artists of the 20th century and her artistic influence endures in both Europe and her home country.
