What is Abstract Art?

Abstract art doesn't show things exactly as they look in real life. Instead, it uses lines, shapes, colors, forms, and expressive marks to convey feelings and ideas. Artists who create abstract art use different techniques to create their art, combining usual methods with new and creative approaches.

Jackson Pollock defined abstract art as "visible energy and motion." He explained that this kind of art let him express a part of his mind that was silent before. Artists didn't have to show the world exactly as it appeared anymore. Abstract art allowed them to make art by listening to their instincts or unconscious thoughts.
