Collection: Justine Turnbull

Justine Turnbull is a New Zealand artist whose work explores transformation, mythology, and the unseen forces that connect us. Working at the intersection of figuration and abstraction, her paintings are characterised by expressive mark-making, strong forms, and a dynamic sense of movement. Drawing on archetypes, philosophy, and the cyclical nature of life, her work invites reflection on our shared humanity and the constant process of change.

Justinel holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Otago. After running a successful ceramics practice until 2004, she has continued to teach, exhibit, and develop her painting practice. Her work has received numerous accolades, including the NZAFA Merit Award (2024), the People's Choice Award at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery (2018), and the Molly Morpeth Canaday Painting Award (2014). More recently, she was selected for the Wellington Art Review (2024) and was a finalist in the NZAFA Tākina Prize (2025).
