Shane Cotton: Moerewa — Liquid Sleep | Anthony Byrt
Shane Cotton: A career-spanning exploration of one of Aotearoa’s most important living artists.
For over thirty years, Shane Cotton (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Rangi, Ngāti Hine, Te Uri Taniwha) has developed a distinctive painting practice that explores the histories, cultures and visual languages of Aotearoa.
Written by leading art writer Anthony Byrt, this book journeys into Te Tai Tokerau to examine the landscapes, people and historical encounters that inform Cotton’s work, including the world of Kororāreka, Hongi Hika and Te Tiriti.
An insightful and richly researched book offering a deeper understanding of Shane Cotton’s art and the histories that continue to shape New Zealand.
Shane Cotton ONZM was born in Upper Hutt and has Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Rangi, Ngāti Hine and Te Uri Taniwha iwi affiliations. He graduated from the University of Canterbury’s Ilam School of Fine Arts in 1988 and later lectured in Māori visual arts at Massey University. In 2005, he left teaching to focus on painting full time.
Cotton’s work explores the meeting of Māori and Pākehā cultures, particularly the influence of Christianity on Māori art, and the histories of Te Tai Tokerau. Drawing on his whakapapa, his paintings raise important questions about identity and the relationship between Māori and Pākehā in Aotearoa.
His achievements include the Frances Hodgkins Fellowship in 1998, the Seppelt Contemporary Art Award, and an Arts Foundation Laureate award in 2008. In 2012, he was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the visual arts.
