The global oversight of women's contributions to the first century of photography, including within New Zealand, has historically led to a skewed focus on male photographers.

This significant publication aims to rectify this imbalance by shedding light on a substantial and previously unrecognized group of women photographers. These women, both professional and amateur, operated in New Zealand between the 1860s and 1960. They played roles as assistants in early photography studios or eventually established their own studios.

This book guides readers on an immersive journey through the lesser-explored realms of nineteenth and early twentieth-century photographic studios. It delves into intimate domestic settings, urban streetscapes, and even remote mountain landscapes, showcasing the diverse range of photographic practices that women engaged in. Through captivating visuals and compelling individual narratives, this publication brings to the forefront a crucial ensemble of photographers who have long been overlooked.
