Dear Colin, Dear Ron: The Selected Letters of Colin McCahon and Ron O’Reilly, by Peter Simpson
A long friendship in art and ideas through letters.
This substantial book, selected by Colin McCahon scholar Peter Simpson, highlights a key relationship in New Zealand art.
Painter Colin McCahon and librarian Ron O’Reilly first met in 1938 and remained close until McCahon’s health declined in 1981. Their 380 letters discuss McCahon’s art, the contemporary scene, and philosophical ideas, offering a deep look into their friendship and artistic partnership.
Illustrated with 64 images referenced in the letters, this collection is the first to transcribe and compile these letters, enriching the understanding of McCahon's work. Insightful essays by O’Reilly’s son Matthew and McCahon’s grandson Finn further enhance this essential addition to any McCahon enthusiast’s library.
